Street Photography | Advanced & Professionals

Palermo is a city of manifold faces, a city that seems to fall and wither and then is born again, over and over, nurturing many different realities. The history of Sicily’s capital is as full of controversy as glamour, shaped by dusty memories of a noble past and the dark decades characterized by the presence of mafia. One of Palermos sons is street photographer Fabio Sgroi. His works are strongly connected to his home town and reflect Palermo in all its contradictions between tradition and rebellion. Together with Fabio Sgroi, you will discover and get to know an unknown Palermo, hidden away from touristic and common destinations, a city full of stories and sidelong glances. During one of the oldest religious celebrations in the city at Christmas time, you will learn more about reportage photography and go out to capture situations and faces of the procession. The second part of the workshop will be dedicated instead to a photo expedition in Palermos rural outskirts. Here you can follow your inner impulse and photograph life and architecture of a “forgotten” part of the city.

8th – 9th December 2019

Date: The next workshop is provided for the date above. Please check the availability of places for the date in our booking tool on the right. For more information please send a message to mail@siciscatta.com

Your Coach

Fabio Sgroi was born in 1965 in Palermo. From 1984 on he began as an autodidact to photograph his friends, young rebels of the Sicilian punk and underground scene, and thus approaches photography. Two years later he joined the photography agency “Informazione fotografica” of Letizia Battaglia and Franco Zecchin for the daily newspaper “L’Ora” in Palermo. From the beginning he dedicated his photographic works to his hometown Palermo and Sicily with a focus on religious ceremonies and Sicilian everyday life. Part of his portfolio are also panoramic formats of extensive urban landscapes and industrial archeology. In 2018, he launched the two photo books “Past-Euphoria. Post-Europa” (Crowdbooks) and “Palermo 1984-1986. Early works” (Yard Press). Sgroi published his photographs in several Italian and international magazines and newspaper and took part of various single and group exhibitions.
